ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability e.V.

ICLEI and Mobility

ICLEI is a global organization that works with local governments to generate political awareness on key themes in the area of sustainability. In its network, ICLEI has, 12 mega-cities, 100 super-cities and urban regions, 450 large cities, and 450 small and medium-sized cities and towns in 84 countries.

Urban Mobility is a key area of focus for ICLEI as urban areas today face chronic demands for faster commutes, safer roads, more space, and cleaner air, and local governments face increasingly difficult decisions about mobility issues and land use policies in their communities. ICLEI addresses transport issues through its transport initiative, EcoMobility.

EcoMobility is travel through integrated, socially inclusive, and environmentally friendly transport options, including and integrating walking, cycling, wheeling, and passenging[1]. Thus, enabling citizens and organizations access to goods, services, and information in a sustainable manner. EcoMobility supports citizens’ quality of life, increases travel choices, and promotes social cohesion.

ICLEI’s EcoMobility initiative is comprised of three major projects:

  1. EcoMobility Allianceis a select group of ambitious cities that have achieved excellent results in certain dimensions of sustainable mobility, and that strive to reach similar results in other EcoMobility fields.2. EcoMobility World Festival will feature a neighborhood in Suwon, South Korea, with residents temporarily adopting an ecomobile lifestyle to experience how EcoMobility can influence their lives positively. The four-week long Festival will present a real-life vision of car-free urban living in the future.3. EcoMobility SHIFT is a project to develop a total quality management scheme – the SHIFT scheme – to be launched in April 2013. This scheme allows cities to assess their current EcoMobility performance and evaluate the effectiveness of their policies and actions to achieve a more sustainable transport system in terms of environment, accessibility, safety, and equity.
